New domestic violence laws in force today!

Every now and then I read a post which makes me happy that a law is developing or being introduced that will truly make a situation better, and today was one of those days!

Domestic violence is sadly a daily occurrence in the UK, and so many people, men and women suffer at the hand’s of their partners, and sadly don’t feel confident or comfortable enough to seek help.  It isn’t just physical abuse all the time either, it is the controlling behaviour, the emotional abuse, and the fact they make their partners fear their own safety in general, and if they don’t comply with the rules or orders they dictate.

“The legislation will target those who subject spouses, partners and family members to psychological and emotional torment but stop short of violence.   … It could also involve stopping someone from socialising, controlling their social media accounts, surveillance through apps and dictating what they wear.”.

Hopefully this new legislation will pave the way for charges in cases where there is clear evidence of repeated “controlling/coercive behaviour”.  Something needs to be done, and hopefully this legislation will have a positive impact on the situation.

As apparently, 85% of people according to a survey, do not think the current legislation provides enough protection and support for victims of domestic violence.  That is a horrible statistic, and it is about time something was done to improve this, victims need to know they are protected both by legislation and in feeling comfortable and safe enough to report their partners!

I am going to be looking at the legislation in full, as well as some legal articles on it, but for now I wanted to quickly share this with you!  (Expect an updated post soon!)
