Butterflies protected in Pacific Grove

On a day trip out and about the coast near San Francisco including places such as Carmel, Monterey, Cannery Row, Pebble Beach and the coastal roads (and lots more)… Our tour guide randomly told us a strange legal fact, which I just had to share with you (plus as some of you may know I really like butterflies – well I especially like the art kind.)

So in Pacific Grove (near Pebble Beach) monarch butterflies are protected from molestation under a city ordinance.  I’m not sure how somebody would molest a butterfly but that is the law.

So I am going to go away and research this and upload a post with a bit more information/background!

I wonder whether this applies to any other animals over the U.S?
