{"id":2387,"date":"2016-01-13T17:26:54","date_gmt":"2016-01-13T17:26:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lawyerinthemaking.co.uk\/?p=2387"},"modified":"2016-01-13T17:26:54","modified_gmt":"2016-01-13T17:26:54","slug":"day-13-janlawblogpost","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lawyerinthemaking.co.uk\/index.php\/2016\/01\/13\/day-13-janlawblogpost\/","title":{"rendered":"Day 13 #janlawblogpost"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So today&#8217;s strange law isn&#8217;t an official law but something has been implemented quite recently in Mumbai.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\">BBC<\/a> News article entitled\u00a0&#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-asia-india-35289536\">India Mumbai identifies &#8216;no selfie&#8217; zones after woman dies<\/a>&#8221; identifies 15 places in the Indian city of Mumbai were talking selfies &#8220;can be dangerous&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Some of these places\u00a0include \u00a0major tourist attractions such as the iconic sea-facing Marine Drive promenade and the popular Girgaum Chowpatty beach.<\/p>\n<p>The reason the police have banned selfies in these designated areas was due to an 18 year old girl who drowned in the sea last week\u00a0after taking a selfie.<\/p>\n<p>This idea hasn&#8217;t come out of the blue, as last year the authorities made the decision to impose\u00a0a &#8220;no selfie zone&#8221; at a\u00a0<a class=\"story-body__link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-europe-34118109\">Hindu festival<\/a>\u00a0due to fears they could cause stampedes\u00a0and signs saying &#8220;no selfie zone&#8221; can be seen around the two festival sites in the city (which is the capital of Maharashtra state).<\/p>\n<p>Mumbai police spokesperson Dhananjay Kulkarni told the BBC that the places where taking selfies was risky included Bandra Bandstand, Sion Fort and Worli Fort, all places popular with tourists.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The police will now approach the city&#8217;s municipality to prevent accidents at such spots due to people taking selfies. The municipality may deploy life guards and install warning signs,&#8221; Mr Kulkarni said.<\/p>\n<p>The police warning follows Saturday&#8217;s incident when three girls trying to take a selfie near the sea in the Bandra area fell into the water.<\/p>\n<p>One of them drowned and her body is yet to be recovered.<\/p>\n<p>A passerby, 37-year-old Ramesh Walanju, jumped in and helped save the other two girls but was washed away by the choppy waters and his body was found floating in a nearby creek on Monday, AFP said.<\/p>\n<p>In September<a class=\"story-body__link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-asia-india-34287655\">\u00a0a Japanese tourist died\u00a0<\/a>after allegedly slipping down the stairs while taking a selfie at the Taj Mahal monument in Agra.<\/p>\n<p>Though this may not be so unusual, and could become a growing trend as last year, the Russian government reportedly launched a campaign to make young people think twice before snapping selfies in risky situations, this is because in May\u00a0a 21-year-old woman survived accidentally shooting herself in the head while posing for a selfie with a gun in Moscow.<\/p>\n<p>Allegedly there may have been several cases of children being electrocuted while taking selfies on top of railway carriages in Russia &#8211; which just seems absurd!<\/p>\n<p>Plus you probably saw in the news last\u00a0August, that a man in Spain was gored to death by a bull while taking a selfie at the annual bull running festival in the town of Villaseca de la Sagra.<\/p>\n<p>What do you make of this? \u00a0Are taking selfies dangerous?<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca x<\/p>\n<p>#janlawblogpost<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>So today&#8217;s strange law isn&#8217;t an official law but something has been implemented quite recently in Mumbai.
